They did a damn fine job translating it to film, especially this book which has been round for ages. FIlm and Lit. is definantly two differet genres, so you can expect it to be a little varied. Of course this is bad because most people already have the idea of how Middle Earth looks in their minds and that this is a story that shouldn't be changed or altered in any way, but alas, it still is wonderful.
2. The effects are better than you would think. Sure they still look shaky in lots of areas, but think about this. All those 80s movies you watch now that have horrible effects didnt look any better back then. And you can still watch and enjoy those movies. Effects unfortuanly can look good but never perfect, and its the same with CGI animation. Some people expect too much.
3. For those who havent read the series, or don't enjoy this kind of movie and think a lot of it was too vauge. Well let me tell you something. You have no imagination at all. Why does everything have to be laid out and explained for you in a film? Using your imagination wouldn't hurt, or even reading the hobbit or waiting for the rest of the films to come out. Again you expect too much, and then again this is why so many good films flop and are never touched again.
4. The makers poured their heart and soul into this film. It has been one of the films that have stood out in the past few years, and has actually been carefuly made and crafted. You can shout out a hll yeah to your Gladiators and Titanics, but in the LOTR we can see how careful they where to attempt to make it perfect. Unfortuantly i believe if JRR Tolkien was still alive he would disagree about the making of this film, but anything has to be better than that wretched cartoon.
5. All in all its good, its really good, it stands out, it surpasses many movies in a different kind of way. I dont believe in rankings of movies, but i do belive that this one is something special. It in no way should replace the book, in fact it should spark your ambitions to read it if you haven't yet. Above all if you have a strong imagiation,the film shouldnt overtake your current visions. The film is nothing more than an addictive to the book, and its a glorius film, with flaws of course, but you cant make everyone happy, and films will always have their flaws.
